January brings us a new year with new challenges, including life and weather. Here in Colorado, we face brutal winter weather with cold and snow, and the last few years we have had to deal with the added danger of wildfires. It's a great time to make it your New Year's resolution to inventory items in your home and schedule a review of your current coverage on your home and auto policies.

• Here are some important winter tips to remember:

  • Make sure winter service on your car is done and tires are in good shape.

  • It's a good idea to have an Atlas in the car (we have those for you in the office here ;) as well as extra supplies like blankets, snacks, phone chargers and water. Weather can turn fast on your drive.

Now let's talk about your home. We've got some tips that will all benefit you whether on a trip or staying home.

• Make sure to insulate pipes, particularly on the North facing side of your house.

• When you are leaving for a trip or if the temperature is dropping to those single digits, leave your faucets trickling just enough to avoid freezing.

• Do not turn your thermostat below 60 degrees while you are gone. It's tempting to save money, but it may invalidate a claim should you need to file one.

• Be sure to check around your home for any debris or dead foliage that may need to be removed to help protect your home from spreading wildfires.
